Balaton Passenger Traffic Almost Reaches 3 Million

From mid-May to mid-September, almost 3 million people traveled by train to Lake Balaton – read a summary published on the website of MÁV-Start Zrt. on Tuesday.

The summer passenger traffic, calculated together with the pre- and post-season, was almost 40 percent higher than last year, and almost 37 percent higher than 2019. In the off-season, 232,000 people traveled by train to Lake Balaton, which is 27 percent more than last year and 22.5 percent more than before the epidemic. More than two-thirds of them traveled to the south coast, Balatonlelle, Balatonfüred, Siófok and Zamárdi were the most popular destinations during the entire season, they wrote.

Thanks to the developments, it was possible to reach Lake Balaton from more areas than ever before without a transfer. Due to the large number of passengers, double-decker trains also ran in the off-season.

The Owl Trains running at night on the south coast also handled significant traffic, carrying thousands of passengers on weekends and during festivals. The railway retro weekends and the Passenger cars also proved to be popular, they added. The majority of passengers bought tickets on the MÁV online phone application and on the Elvira website, 15 percent bought tickets from the machines located at the stations. 62,000 one-way bicycle tickets, 24,000 smart tickets, and almost 38,000 day tickets and vacation passes were sold.
